Inflammatory bowel disease
Inflammatory bowel disease — Crohn's diseaseA form of IBD that can affect any part of the gastrointestinal tract, often in a patchy, discontinuous pattern, and may involve all layers of the bowel wall. and ulcerative colitisA form of IBD limited to the colon and rectum, causing continuous inflammation of the innermost lining. — comprises chronic, relapsing conditions of the gastrointestinal tract driven by a dysregulated immune response. Its consequences reach beyond the gut: extraintestinal manifestations affecting the joints, skin, eyes and liver are common, and a substantial proportion of patients will require surgery over the course of their disease. No cure exists at present — care is aimed at achieving and sustaining remission — and global incidence continues to rise, including in regions where the disease was once rare.
Clinical and translational work in Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, including extraintestinal manifestations, comorbid liver disease, and patient-centred outcomes, pursued among other affiliations within the Swiss IBD Cohort Study and UR-CARE (United Registries for Clinical Assessment and Research), the ECCO-hosted European IBD registry.

A long-standing focus on H. pylori infection — its role in gastroduodenal disease and gastric cancer risk, its interplay with the surrounding gastric and gut microbiota, and, increasingly, its association with metabolic, cardiovascular, and neurological outcomes beyond the stomach. National Coordinator for Switzerland within the European Registry on Helicobacter pylori Management (Hp-EuReg), which tracks real-world eradication practice across Europe.
